17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:17-19 King James Version (KJV)
In the history of our lives, we will notice events repeat themselves. We may find ourselves continuously responding to similar events in identical ways, tracing a particular emotional reaction back to when we were children. Children that were hurt, disappointed, or disillusioned. We step into these iterations and unknowingly activate one or all of our past Selves as adults.
I have created an immersive, physical version of this experience. We as audience become observer to the performing observer (sculpture piece), immediately forcing our perspective to activate outside of our Selves. This performer observes the painting through a mirror, refracting seven selves represented as children.
As a basis to describe an adult individual’s emotional reaction, I have used the number seven as it corresponds to the classic “seven deadly sins”. This number and idea has been translated, passed down throughout history, throughout literature, and religion. It denotes human want of structure and a sense of understanding of the world around them. These “sins” as we know them are not of their original form. Neither is the world we live in today.
